Boise mayor to hold Saturday Office hours for residents

Boise mayor to hold Saturday Office hours for residents

News Release via the city of Boise

Mayor David Bieter will take his "Saturday Office Hours" on the road this Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Collister Library, 4724 W. State St. The event is open to all residents and will run from 9 a.m. to noon.

No appointment is necessary. Visitors will be welcomed on a first-come basis and will have up to 10 minutes each to talk to Mayor Bieter about any topic related to city government.

Mayor Bieter has conducted his "Saturday Office Hours" sessions every few months since taking office in 2004. All citizens are encouraged to participate by bringing to the Mayor's attention any issue they feel is important. There is no limit to possible topics for discussion; past conversations have included the City's budget, ideas on how to improve the city, transportation issues, and many others.

Man slashes toe on North End sidewalk, but county refuses to pay bill

Man slashes toe on North End sidewalk, but county refuses to pay bill

Michael Lawson of Boise was walking his dog in the North End last summer when he stepped into trouble.

“I tripped over a piece of metal sticking up out of the sidewalk," Lawson said. "It turns out that piece of metal is the base from where a street sign was attached to it and knocked it out.”

Lawson sliced his toe in three places.

He went to see the doctor to patch it up. The bill topped $400, but what happened next added insult to injury for Lawson.

“I turned in an accident claim on Ada County Highway District and it refused to pay the medical bill," he said. "What kind of statement are you saying to the community? If there's going to be an injury or problem like this, 'sorry, don't know what to tell you you're out of luck."

KBOI 2News contacted ACHD and leaders refused to comment on Lawson’s case. But an official did say that these decisions are made on a case by case basis, and there's no set policy in place.

In an e-mail, ACHD spokeswoman Christine Myron cited a state law.

"Agencies like ACHD have to be on notice to be liable," Myron said. "If we do not have knowledge of a potentially unsafe situation within our jurisdiction, we cannot be held responsible."

It’s a law that doesn’t seem fair to Lawson.

“If they came onto my property and got injured, my insurance or myself would be responsible," he said. "I can't see how it can be any different or why it should be any different.”

ACHD says it relies on its workers, police and the public to help identify issues along its 2,200 miles of roads in the county.

The following projects are part of the GARVEE Transportation Program in southwest Idaho, which uses funds from Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to expedite highway projects.

BOISE - Interstate 84, Cole Road to Broadway Avenue widening

Five weeks of east- and westbound interstate lane closures began Jan. 9 between the Orchard and Broadway interchanges.

The lane closures will be in effect from Jan. 9 until mid-February while crews work on overhead sign foundations. Motorists can also expect intermittent overnight restrictions, reducing traffic to two lanes from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

 - Eastbound I-84 will be reduced to three lanes and one ramp lane between the Orchard and Vista interchanges.

- Westbound I-84 will be reduced to three lanes and one ramp lane between the Broadway and Vista interchanges.

The speed limit will be 55 mph during the five weeks of lane closures.

A map of the lane closures is available here.

The lane closures are part of a project to widen I-84 to four lanes in both directions between Cole/Overland and Broadway. The widening was completed in the summer of 2011.

Concrete Placing Co. Inc., of Boise, is the contractor on the $35.9 million project.
